Wonder Wall Inquiry Centers

Central Idea:  The human body is an intricate system that is constantly changing.

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are

One way students take ownership of each unit is regularly asking questions about their learning.  For this lesson, all of the wonder wall questions were collected and made into stations.  The stations included books, articles, photographs, microscopes, and even a stethoscope (Thanks, Sophia!!).  The goal was to find the answers to each of the 10 questions written on sticky notes.

For every IB unit, we focus on a set of skills that help us be successful. These are life skills that allow our school to teach the whole child. Self-management skills, specifically organization and time management, are at the center of this unit.  During this lesson, students were challenged to manage their time well so they could finish most, if not all the stations.  We also discussed the challenge of keeping all of their information organized in their journal.

Their questions were….

  • Why are we tired after exercising?
  • Why do we check our pulse?
  • Why can’t I do a sit-up?
  • How big is a squirrel’s skull?
  • What would happen if we didn’t have a heart?
  • Is blood blue inside the body?
  • What does our tongue look like up close?
  • What would happen if we didn’t have a brain?
  • What do skin cells look like?
  • Why do my muscles get sore?
