Outdoor Learning

For writing and math on Thursday, our classroom was in the woods.  With this weather, it is almost impossible to stay indoors!  The major research skills that we practiced throughout the day were observing and organizing data.

Measurement and Fractions

Everywhere you looked, new plants were sprouting. Students practiced measuring in centimeters the seedlings and saplings they found in the woods.  After they collected their data, they figured out what fraction of their plants were between specific ranges of length.  For example, what fraction of their plants were between 1-5 centimeters?

Opinion Writing

With about a yard of string, each student mapped out a miniature nature trail.  They were challenged to look closely and find a few major points of interest.  Later, they wrote a persuasive essay describing why others should visit their small-scale hikes.  Waterfalls, mountains, ziplines, and stick bridges were just a few of their creative choices for points of interests.
