Poetry in Motion

Central Idea: People can convey thoughts and ideas through poetry.

Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves

This week, we looked at poetry through the lens of movement.  Students had the opportunity to practice their nonverbal communication skills and social skills as they worked in groups to create choreography to poetry.  They practiced making interesting shapes and using different levels of space (low, middle, and high levels) to communicate the meaning of several Native American poems. They had the chance to perform in front of each other, take constructive feedback, and revise their work.  Later, they wrote reflections on their experiences and will assess how they did with their group. We had fun, to say the least 🙂  (Sorry about the sound for some of them!)

The goal for our students is for them to ultimately do something with their learning outside of our classroom. We celebrate when they share how they took action at home or if they bring something in that they’ve done at home that show they extended their learning. Here are some snapshots of some kids that have taken action at home over the course of this unit so far! Kiarrah, Brooklinn, Aymiah, and Fahima created and led a new math center!imageRelating to our last unit, Aymiah demonstrated a science experiment that she did at home!imageLee also brought in his experiment that he did at home to share with us!image These students all wrote poetry at home!imageThey all applied the inquiry cycle at home by creating an experiment at home!

Thanks
